Skills and Techniques

PS1:
The learner will be able to perform with expression and accuracy, alone and with others, a varied repertoire representing diverse genres, cultures and styles in grade IV & V literature.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.1.1 Posture
The learner will be able to demonstrate correct posture.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.1.2 Right Hand Pizzicato
The learner will be able to demonstrate right hand pizzicato, achieving a clear, resonant tone.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.1.3 Technique/Left Hand
The learner will be able to demonstrate correct left hand position.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.1.4 Technique/ Cello
The learner will be able to demonstrate ability to use forward and backward extensions.

The learner will be able to demonstrate through vocalization the intervals of a minor and major third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth and octave.

The learner will be able to demonstrate through vocalization his/her ensemble part while other students sing or play contrasting parts.

PS2:
The learner will be able to understands the system, vocabulary, theory, and the conventions necessary to read and notate music in grade IV & V literature.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.1 Technique/Sightreading
The learner will be able to demonstrate by sightreading accurately and expressively in ensemble and individually music which is one grade level below materials being studied.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.2 Scales
The learner will be able to demonstrate (perform) major and melodic three octave scales (violins: G, A, Bb and C majors, g and a melodic minors; Violas/Cellos: C, D, Eb and F majors, c and d melodic minors; Bass: F, G, Ab and Bb majors, f and g melodic minors) at M.M. quarter note =120, using various bowings and rhythmic figures.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.3 Music Terminology
The learner will be able to identify, define, and utilize terminology used in materials being studied.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.4 Notation
The learner will be able to identify notes by letter names and demonstrate fingerings in higher positions.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.5 Identify by Notation
The learner will be able to identify and perform music in alternate clefs (Cello/Bass: tenor and treble; Viola: treble) or 8va(violin) as notated in the music.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.6 Musical Understanding
The learner will be able to identify key signatures in materials being studied.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.2.7 Music Symbols
The learner will be able to identify, define, and demonstrate standard notation symbols for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, articulation and expression in materials being studied.

PS3:
The learner will be able to create music using improvisational and compositional techniques in small and large ensembles with level IV & V literature.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.3.1 Improvisation
The learner will be able to compose simple melodic and rhythmic variations.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.3.2 Improv over Chords
The learner will be able to improvise a melody to a I-IV-V-I progression.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.3.3 Composition
The learner will be able to compose an eight measure melody using teacher-specified parameters.

PS4:
The learner will be able to analyze and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their own and others' performances by applying the specific criteria appropriate to level IV & V literature.

The learner will be able to demonstrate ability to properly care for and maintain his/her instrument.
  
MUS.ORCH-A.4.2 Musical Understanding
The learner will be able to interpret more complex rhythms using a standard counting system (e.g.Cooley system/ 1& 2&).
  
MUS.ORCH-A.4.3 Interpret Meters
The learner will be able to interpret and compose rhythmic patterns and complex meters demonstrating technical facility and precision commensurate with grade IV level music and above.
